Limits of (The Way I Thought To Use) Bear Blog
Thinking out loud, for clarity
Some of us have set up a "bits" blog on Bear Blog, while preserving longer posts on our own self-hosted, self-owned blogging platforms.
Here's why this doesn't work:
- short-form content serves only four purposes:
- navel-gazing
- voyeurism
- social media brainrot engagement bait
- healthy human conversation
Bear Blog chooses not to include native comments. You can have them, but it's not "the thing to do" for very deliberate choices
when you only have a little burst to share, the dopamine you get from engagement is enough to pull it out of you. No dopamine? No drools
when you want your drivel to last longer, you prefer to own it
The benefits of Bear Blog:
- "the best camera is the one you have with you": write moar
- "less is better" for Forever Data: must lean into this
- some really thoughtful design choices, e.g., speed, and how tags work
